Ghana’s High Commissioner to Namibia, Alhaji Abdul-Rahman Haruna Attah, has expressed his commitment to strengthening tourism, trade, culture and other exchange programmes between Ghana and Namibia.
He said he intends to achieve this through the forthcoming third edition of the “November in Namibia” initiative, describing it as a “uniquely packaged” programme that promotes intra-African cooperation.
Speaking to the B&FT at an event dubbed Namibia Braai Night held at the Ghana Club in Accra, Alhaji Attah, who was the special guest, noted that the initiative presents an opportunity to deepen bilateral relations and attract investments between the two countries.
The event brought together patrons and guests who networked while enjoying grilled Namibian meat and cocktails. The evening featured musical and drama performances, with notable personalities such as Nigerian actor Segun Arinze and former Minister of Information, Mr Fritz Baffour, in attendance.
The Namibia Braai Night was organised by Hype.Up with support from Abanga Foods, Travelex Aviation, and Africa Arts Network, among others.
Alhaji Attah recounted his participation in the first two editions of the initiative, which, he said, were both highly successful and well received. “The success of the previous editions created strong anticipation for the third one. And now, rather fittingly, I am going there as Ghana’s High Commissioner-designate to Namibia. This gives me a new role in advancing people-to-people connections between our two countries and across Africa,” he remarked.
He added that President John Mahama, during the presentation of credentials to new ambassadors, reminded them of the need to deliver results in their respective postings. “It is therefore imperative that I perform by promoting this initiative to the best of my ability, as it holds great potential to boost tourism and investment in Ghana,” he stressed.
Boosting tourism and trade
Highlighting the broader benefits, Alhaji Attah explained that the November in Namibia initiative will foster intra-African trade and encourage stronger business partnerships and investments between Ghana and Namibia. He observed that Namibia’s unique landscapes, wildlife, and cultural heritage would appeal to Ghanaian tourists seeking new travel experiences.
He further noted that the initiative aligns with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agenda, as it promotes cooperation and economic integration within the continent.
In terms of cultural exchange, Alhaji Attah said the programme would enhance mutual understanding and collaboration, while also spotlighting investment opportunities in key sectors such as tourism, agriculture, and infrastructure development.
For his part, Mr. Baffour, took the opportunity to educate patrons on the history and significance of the Ghana Club, which hosted the event.
Background
The November in Namibia initiative is a tourism and business collaboration between Ghana and Namibia designed to boost intra-African trade, tourism, and cultural ties.
Launched following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two countries in April 2022, the programme features a 10-day visit by a Ghanaian delegation to Namibia. The trip includes business-to-business engagements, tourism exploration, and cultural exchange activities aimed at deepening bilateral relations and economic cooperation.
