The Africa Women and Children Conference (AFRIWOCC) has confirmed a lineup of high-level speakers and strategic partners for its 2025 edition, scheduled for October 6–7 at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra, with extensive options for virtual participation.
The two-day hybrid conference, which will run under the theme “Young Voices, Innovative Ideas, Greater Impact for Africa,” will combine live sessions, in-person engagements, and virtual panel discussions to accommodate a global audience.
This year’s event is being co-hosted by AFRIWOCC and the United Nations Ghana Office, under the leadership of former second lady, Samira Bawumia and Resident Coordinator at Zia Choudhury respectively.
Confirmed speakers and participation
The conference will feature strong governmental representation, including Djami Diallo, Minister of Environment for the Republic of Guinea; Evelyn Ndlovu, Minister of Environment, Climate and Wildlife for Zimbabwe; and Phyona Nyamutoro, Uganda’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Development.
They will be joined by international development leaders such as Dr. Kevin Kariuki, Vice-President at the African Development Bank (AfDB).
In line with the theme, youth and civil society voices will also take centre stage, with changemakers like Fatou Jeng, Founder of Clean Earth Gambia, and Joshua Amponsem, Co-Director of the Youth Climate Justice Fund, expected to contribute.
Building on momentum
Following the success of its maiden edition in 2023, AFRIWOCC has solidified its reputation as one of Africa’s leading platforms for advancing the interests of women and children in climate leadership, policy influence, and cross-sectoral collaboration.
The 2023 event gathered stakeholders from across Africa and the international community, culminating in the adoption of a six-point communique on climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Organisers note that despite contributing the least to global carbon emissions, Africa continues to suffer disproportionately from climate change impacts such as floods, droughts, food insecurity, and displacement. These realities, they say, are lived experiences for millions of young Africans and women across the continent.
Conference focus
AFRIWOCC 2025 aims to build on this momentum by driving bold and inclusive actions toward a climate-resilient Africa. Sessions will spotlight the role of young people in rallying the continent, influencing policy, and advancing equitable, sustainable, and future-driven climate solutions.
Key focus areas include youth leadership for climate action, education and skills development, inclusive governance, entrepreneurship for economic empowerment, as well as the roles of technology, innovation, and agribusiness.
Strategic partnerships
The reach and impact of this year’s conference are being amplified through a coalition of partners including the United Nations Ghana, Government of Ghana, German Cooperation, Ashesi University, the Kosmos Innovation Center, and the Clean Cooking Alliance.
