The Climate Communications and Local Governance Africa (CCLG-Africa), a leading climate advocacy group, has entered into a strategic partnership with the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) to intensify climate advocacy, awareness, and local-level action across the country.
Ghana faces an urgent climate reality. Available data shows that the country is projected to experience rising temperatures, with a significant chance of exceeding the critical 1.5°C warming threshold within the next five years. Such changes are expected to intensify extreme weather events—including droughts, floods, sea-level rise, and wildfires—while disrupting rainfall patterns.
The consequences threaten food and water security, agricultural and coastal livelihoods, and vital infrastructure, underscoring the need for strengthened adaptation measures and accelerated implementation of climate pledges such as those under the Climate Promise 2025 initiative. Recognizing these challenges, CCLG-Africa and NALAG have committed to a joint agenda that will design and implement localized solutions, build institutional capacity, and enhance nationwide awareness of the impacts of climate change.
Speaking at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), President of CCLG-Africa, Kofi Don-Agor, highlighted the transformative potential of the collaboration: “This partnership is a testament to the power of collaboration in driving meaningful change. CCLG-Africa and NALAG are committed to working together to promote sustainable development and strengthen climate resilience. Our joint efforts will help safeguard livelihoods and accelerate Ghana’s transition to a climate-resilient future.”
The General Secretary of NALAG, Sheriff Jerry Amarh, emphasized the importance of addressing climate impacts at the grassroots level: “Climate change affects every aspect of people’s daily lives—from the homes we live in, to the work we do, and the services we depend on. As the mouthpiece of all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), NALAG recognizes the importance of strategic partnerships. Working with CCLG-Africa will empower us to better educate our members, advocate for stronger climate policies, and promote good practices that will enhance resilience at the local level.”
Beyond advocacy, the partnership is expected to deliver long-term benefits through joint initiatives, research collaborations, and capacity-building programs designed to equip local governments and communities with the tools to confront climate challenges more effectively.
This alliance between CCLG-Africa and NALAG represents a crucial step in aligning national and local governance structures with climate action, ensuring that the fight against climate change is rooted not only in policy but also in community-driven solutions.
