The Economic Fighters League (EFL), led by Commander-in-Chief Ernesto Yeboah, has issued a call to action ahead of Ghana’s 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Speaking at the UDS Guesthouse in Accra on August 26, 2024, Yeboah urged Ghanaians to reclaim their power from the political duopoly of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The EFL, a vocal critic of both major parties, has positioned itself as a force for radical change, demanding a shift towards a government that truly serves the people.
The EFL emphasized that the upcoming elections represent a crucial moment for the nation. After 32 years of governance by the NPP-NDC duopoly, Ghanaians have endured economic mismanagement, corruption, and failed promises.
Yeboah highlighted the devastating impact of this long-term misrule, citing rampant poverty, deteriorating infrastructure, and widespread disillusionment. The Economic Fighters League declared that the time has come to dismantle the existing power structures and create a government focused on the interests of the people rather than the elites.
The EFL criticized both the NPP and NDC for their self-serving actions, pointing to policies like the unpopular E-Levy and recent news of millions of cedis being allocated for renovating Parliament Chambers amid widespread economic hardship.
These decisions, according to the EFL, prove that both parties are more loyal to themselves than to the citizens they claim to represent.
In response to this disillusionment, the EFL called on all eligible voters to exercise their political rights with vigilance and integrity. The organization urged Ghanaians to cast their votes deliberately, supporting candidates who genuinely represent the people’s interests, rather than being swayed by financial incentives or loyalty to the traditional parties. This election, the EFL stated, is not just a destination but the launching pad for reclaiming the nation from decades of corruption and greed.
The EFL also issued a strong message to Ghana’s Electoral Commission, demanding that it upholds the rule of law and refrain from disenfranchising candidates through exorbitant filing fees or arbitrary disqualifications. The EFL made it clear that any attempt to suppress the voices of alternative candidates would be seen as an attack on the rights of Ghanaians and would not be tolerated.
Additionally, the EFL called on the media to provide fair and unbiased coverage of the elections. They urged journalists to resist sensationalism and ensure that all candidates, including independents challenging the political duopoly, are given equal opportunities to be heard. The media, they argued, has a crucial role in amplifying the voices of those marginalized by the current system and in promoting a truly democratic election process.
Concerns were also raised about the increasing militarization of Ghana’s police force, particularly during election periods. The EFL condemned the use of excessive force against civilians exercising their rights, warning that this undermines democratic norms and creates a climate of fear. They called on the Ghana Police Service to protect the public and ensure a free and fair election, reminding security forces that they are part of the people they serve.
The Economic Fighters League concluded with a call for unity among other political parties and independent candidates. Simply opposing the NPP-NDC duopoly, they argued, is not enough. Candidates must demonstrate that they are genuinely committed to serving Ghana and must put the nation’s interests above their personal ambitions. By building strong alliances and prioritizing the well-being of the people, these alternatives can present a viable path forward for the country.
The EFL’s message to Ghanaians is one of empowerment and reclamation. As the 2024 elections approach, they are urging citizens to stand firm, exercise their rights, and demand accountability from those in power.
The road ahead may be challenging, but the Economic Fighters League believes that through unity and determination, a brighter future is possible for Ghana. The movement calls on all patriotic Ghanaians to join them in reclaiming the nation’s power and shaping a government that truly serves the people.
