Consultant warns against Blanket use of mother tongue at KG and lower primary

A consultant to the National Council for Curriculum Assessment has indicated that the use of the mother tongue as a medium of instruction for teaching children at the Kindergarten and lower primary school, will not necessarily work if it takes a blanket approach.

Speaking to host Julius Caesar Anadem on the Ultimate Breakfast, Dr. Martey Jectey-Nyarko, admitted that using the local languages engenders a better understanding and appreciation of subjects as a majority of Ghanaian children are socialized in their mother tongue.

There is somebody who stays somewhere that about ninety percent of the people speak Twi. If you tell the child to start thinking or relating to things in a language which is foreign, that child will get some challenges,” he explained.

He was however quick to add that negligible as they may be, several other children grow up in homes where parents and siblings communicate in English and will face challenges in school if they were to be taught in the local languages.

Dr Jectey – Nyarko called on parents to emphasize on the learning of the local languages to support the GES to make the implementation of the new curriculum SEAMLESS.

The KNUST College of arts lecturer stressed that, “no country has developed on other people’s languages. In all the developed countries, all the children use their own languages right from the scratch.”

Per the new curricular to be implemented in September this year, it will be mandatory for teachers to use the local languages as a medium of teaching with English treated as a subject at the kindergarten and lower primary school.
