President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana is aiming to exceed $10 billion in non-traditional exports (NTEs) by the year 2030, a target he believes is well within reach.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Ghana Horticultural Expo 2025 in Accra, President Mahama highlighted that Ghana’s non-traditional exports surpassed $3.5 billion in 2024, with horticulture leading the charge.
He emphasised the need to transition from a dependency mindset to one of economic leadership through trade. “We must shift from aid to trade, from dependence to dominance in the export value chain,” he stated.
Addressing young people and women in particular, President Mahama said: “Agriculture is not a fallback occupation, it is a career of choice. Own it, live it, thrive in it.”
He also called on the private sector to invest with vision and align with government efforts to scale up processing, certification, and export capacity.
“Let us move from conferences to cold chains, from words to warehouses, and from policies to productivity. The time is now, we are not starting from zero,” he added.
President Mahama stressed that increasing high-value agricultural exports is key to stabilizing Ghana’s currency by boosting foreign exchange earnings.
“We are on that path boldly and deliberately, and we will work hand-in-hand with exporters to reach our goals,” he said.
Referencing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), he pointed to the potential of a 1.4 billion-person single market. “We must not only trade more, we must produce more and Ghana must lead in this effort.”
He urged financial institutions to take bold steps in de-risking the agriculture sector and to support agribusiness start-ups with real capital.
He also called on Ghana EXIM Bank to become a catalyst for export sector growth and issued a direct appeal to development partners: “Invest with us in infrastructure and agri-tech.”
Mr. Davis Korboe, President of the Federation of Associations of Ghana Exporters (FAGE), expressed appreciation to President Mahama for his commitment to promoting the nation’s export sector.
