Jollof Festival: Gambia's 'colourless' Jollof too good for the bragging duo, Ghana and Nigeria

Ghana and Nigeria have been bragging about who the Jollof king is in Africa but Gambia has always had a plan and it's just a tasty plan!

When the battle of Jollof Rice is mentioned, Gambia barely comes to mind as Ghana and Nigeria have made it about themselves.

So when the  Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) announced a Jollof Festival as part of their  ‘See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana, and Feel Ghana’ campaign, Gambia had a plan.

 

The Ghana Jollof Festival took place over the weekend of August 26, 2017.

If you know how Africans feel about Jollof, this was not just a festival but a competition that saw many food lovers troop to the University of Ghana Botanical Gardens.

Ghana, Nigeria, Gambia and Senegal battled it out as judges from Mexico and the Netherlands crowned the kings of Jollof rice.

In the end, Gambia’s Jollof which was prepared without tomato sauce so lacked the usual red colour beat Ghana’s Jollof with salted tilapia (locally known as koobi).

Nigeria and Senegal despite believing in their unique ways to make their Jollof taste better could not win either.

 

But it wasn’t all about taste, as the lead judge confirmed to Gambia presenting their food better.

At the end, it was an event filled with culture, colour and great food. Tasty!
