Security across the country during the christmas festivities has been described by the police as good.
No serious crime was recorded during the season except for a few robbery cases which were reported mainly in Accra and Kumasi and in both situations, the police were on hand and manged to arrest the criminals.
The Director General of Police Operations, Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr John Kudalor speaking to graphic.com.gh in an interview said, the national capital and all the regional capitals were peaceful except for the heavy traffic jams which characterised christmas shopping.
However, in all the cases personnel of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, were on hand to direct traffic to ensure sanity on the roads.
COP Kudalor said the season which comes shortly after the general elections was well planned for as the police service rolled out a comprehensive security arrangement for this year's christmas festivities.
He said the service stationed mobile patrol teams in communities nationwide for them to offer help to citizens or visitors in time of distress.
According to COP Kudalor to prevent robbers from attacking traders who might have travelled to the national capital and the regional capitals to do some trading, police patrol vehicles were stationed at all vantage points at the varioyus markets.
All the major highways such as Accra to Kumasi, Aflao, Elubo, Paga, Koforidua, Hohoe and Takoradi as well as from Sunyani orTechiman to Tamale and Wa, were provided with 24 hour security patrols to ensure that members of the public reached their destinations safely.
He said unlike the previous years, where much attention was paid to strategising against the activities of criminals during this period, the service decided to strategise for the criminals as well as provide the needed security to the citizenry to ensure that they cenebrate the yuletide peacefully.
He said the mobile patrol teams which were dispatched were visible throughout the country and this might have sent strong signals to the criminals that the intelligence searchlight was on them tracking and monitoring all their activities.
The Head of Police Operations therefore warned criminals, in their own interest and the interest of peace and security in the country, to abandon their plans as the police know their identities, movements and motives and they are constantly being monitored and will be crashed if they make any attempt to destrupt the peace.
“We should remember that we are all equal befoire the law and the law is no respecter of persons. We as security officers are charged by law to deal with crime and criminalsâ€, he said.
COP Kudalor said road accidents during festivities was of grave concern to the Police Service and in view of this, personnel were also dispatched to the highways particularly those that are accident prone to check over speeding, which is a major cause of accidents on the roads.
He said the Police Administration had taken delivery of a number of vehicles to enable it provide adequate and prompt security.
He urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities within their communities to the police.
The police administration is calling for collaboration from the general public as it rolls out comprehensive security arrangements these festivities.
