Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has declared that Ghana’s prosperity has always been tied to New Patriotic Party (NPP) rule, urging members to rebuild and reclaim power ahead of the 2028 elections.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by former Chief of Staff Frema Osei Opare at the party’s National Delegates Conference, Akufo-Addo said:
“We have, through it all, demonstrated the resilience of our rank and file against challenges, and shown without doubt as our records have proven, that it is always only under the New Patriotic Party that Ghana thrives,” he said.
The former President, who served two terms, acknowledged the NPP’s current challenges but expressed confidence in the party’s ability to rebuild and reclaim the reins of governance.
He called on delegates to approach the conference not just as a constitutional formality, but as a crucial step toward restoring hope among Ghanaians.
“Though we converge here at the University of Ghana, the sentiments of despair and doubt from the people we represent today must weigh on our deliberations. Our work here must be a formidable effort toward restructuring, rebuilding, and reclaiming power,” he said.
Akufo-Addo urged party members to remain united and reject factionalism, describing the NPP not just as a political party, but as a family.
“As is typical of every family, we must find ways to reconcile differences and ensure that every member has a place at the table and is up and ready to be counted.”
He also emphasized youth inclusion, urging the party to unleash the potential of its young people through platforms like the recently launched Patriotic Institute. “They are no more the future, they are the present,” he stressed, adding that their innovation and resilience should be the engine of the party’s resurgence.
On internal reforms, the former President said structures and laws that no longer reflect today’s political realities must be critically reviewed.
Reaffirming his belief in the Danquah-Dombo-Busia political tradition, Akufo-Addo said that tradition has proven most suited to Ghana’s development needs and remains the ideological anchor of the NPP.
“Our conduct throughout this period will either reinforce the confidence of the Ghanaian people in the NPP or draw them away from us,” he warned.
He concluded by wishing delegates fruitful deliberations and invoking divine blessings upon the party and the nation.
“May God bless the New Patriotic Party and us all, and may God bless our homeland Ghana and make her great and strong.”
