Ernest Poku is edging closer to a return for Bayer 04 Leverkusen after a spell on the sidelines, lifting spirits around the club and among supporters who have quickly taken to the lively Dutch-Ghanaian right back.
The 21-year-old has rejoined full team training following a thigh problem that limited him during the trip to Leipzig. His return has been welcomed at the training ground, where his energy and work rate have been missed. Since arriving from Holland last summer, Poku has grown into a fan favourite, admired for his pace and willingness to take responsibility on the pitch.
According to the Kicker, head coach Kasper Hjulmand sounded positive after the session about how close the defender is to competitive action again. Asked whether Poku could feature next weekend, the Dane offered an update: “We believe it is possible.”
The coming days will be decisive for Poku as he pushes for full fitness. The staff will monitor his response to training before deciding if he is ready for the squad or starting eleven against VfB Stuttgart on Saturday.
