The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dismissed an appeal by the Fédération Guinéenne de Football (FEGUIFOOT) seeking to overturn Tanzania’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The case centred on a shirt number irregularity from a qualifier on 19 November 2024, which Tanzania won 1-0.
Guinea argued that a Tanzanian player entered the pitch wearing number 26 instead of his registered number 24, claiming the discrepancy created an unfair tactical advantage and warranted a forfeit.
The CAF Appeal Board rejected that protest on 11 June 2025, prompting FEGUIFOOT to escalate the matter to CAS.
Before the tribunal, Guinea requested either a 3-0 forfeit in its favour or Tanzania’s removal from AFCON, with Guinea taking the vacated slot.
An in-person hearing took place in Lausanne on 17 November 2025.
CAS announced that its panel unanimously upheld the CAF ruling, confirming Tanzania’s qualification.
The decision ensures Tanzania will compete at AFCON, which begins on 21 December 2025.
The tribunal stated that the operative decision is final, with detailed reasoning to follow once confidentiality considerations are addressed.
With the appeal dismissed, Guinea’s attempt to overturn the result is now closed, and Tanzania can continue its tournament preparations without further challenge.
