The impasse between the Black Queens and sports authorities over unpaid bonuses appears close to resolution, following a direct order from the Presidency for immediate payment.
According to sources, the process to release the funds is already underway, bringing relief to players and officials after days of tension.
The Queens, owed $9,500 each for finishing third at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, had boycotted training over the weekend in protest. They demanded their entitlements before honouring Tuesday’s second-leg qualifier against Egypt in Accra.
The standoff prompted interventions from Sports Minister Kofi Adams and GFA President Kurt Okraku. While the Minister assured that the players would be paid within the week, Okraku’s meeting on Monday morning helped convince the team to resume training despite the delay.
With the Presidency now stepping in, optimism has grown that the long-standing issue will be settled. The team is scheduled to train at 5 pm at the Accra Sports Stadium as they prepare for the crucial match, holding a commanding 3-0 advantage from the first leg in Ismailia.
This episode echoes past disputes, including the Queens’ 2016 protest for unpaid bonuses after winning gold at the 2015 African Games.
