Defending champions Western Region will lock horns with Ashanti Region in a highly anticipated final of the 2025 KGL U-17 Inter-Regional Championship on Saturday, September 27, at the McDan Teshie Sports Complex.
Both sides are vying for their second title, setting the stage for a compelling showdown between two of Ghana’s brightest young football talents.
Western Region chasing historic back-to-back titles
Western Region secured their spot in the decider with a hard-fought 1â0 victory over Central Region in Thursday’s semi-final at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence, courtesy of a decisive 55th-minute strike from Ramzy Duah.
The “Western Show Boys,” who claimed last year’s title by defeating Eastern Region, are now in line to become the first reigning champions to appear in consecutive finals in the tournament’s history. Their blend of experience, tactical discipline and youthful exuberance makes them a formidable contender for retaining the crown.
Ashanti Region hungry for glory
Their opponents, Ashanti Region, booked their place in the final after a dramatic 6â5 penalty shootout victory over Greater Accra, following a 1â1 draw in regulation time. Philip Amponsah had given Greater Accra an early lead, only for Alidu Issah to equalise and force the match into penalties, where Ashanti held their nerve to emerge victorious.
The win marks Ashanti’s second final appearance in three years, and they will be aiming to reclaim the title they first won in 2023, defeating Brong Ahafo in a memorable final in Kumasi.
A clash of champions
Saturday’s showdown is a battle between two former champions, each boasting a talented squad, tactical acumen and an unyielding desire for silverware. With both teams having experienced the taste of triumph before, the McDan Teshie Sports Complex is poised to host an electrifying finale that promises goals, drama, and a showcase of Ghana’s future football stars.
The tournament growth and impact
Now in its fifth edition, the KGL U-17 Inter-Regional Championship has firmly established itself as Ghana’s leading platform for identifying and nurturing emerging football talent.
The 2025 edition features an expanded 12-team lineup, bringing together all ten Regional Football Associations alongside the two GFA Elite Academies, ensuring nationwide representation and heightened competitive depth.
Backed by a landmark five-year, $1 million sponsorship from the KGL Foundation, the championship continues to play a central role in the Ghana Football Association’s grassroots development strategy, fostering talent discovery, safeguarding player welfare, and inspiring the next generation of Ghanaian football stars.
The Final awaits
All eyes will be on Saturday’s final, where Western Region aim to defend their crown and Ashanti Region look to reclaim it. With both sides fielding strong lineups, the encounter promises to be a spectacular display of skill, resilience and the next generation of Ghanaian football excellence, culminating in what could be one of the most memorable finals in the history of the tournament.
