Ansgar Knauff is pushing hard to secure a bigger role at Eintracht Frankfurt this season.
The 23-year-old German-Ghanaian winger has not been a regular in the lineup this season, but coach Dino Toppmöller believes his time is coming.
Frankfurt’s summer arrival Ritsu Doan has secured the right wing, while Jean-Mattéo Bahoya has impressed on the left. That left Knauff with limited chances until the recent match against Galatasaray, where he finally showed what he can bring. He seized the opportunity with energy, sharp runs, and a well-taken goal.
Toppmöller acknowledged why Knauff has had to wait. "Like Mattéo, Ansgar missed many parts of the preseason. We initially chose Mattéo because he made a good impression. He scored one goal against Engers and two against Bremen. Then he had the edge, which is completely normal."
The coach added after Galatasaray: "We could have left him in because he didn't do badly. But we felt it was the right game for Ansgar. In the end, we had a lucky hand. He played well and even scored a goal."
Toppmöller made it clear Knauff’s role will grow: "Ansgar is very important and he will play many more games from the start for us."
