The Ashanti Region sealed their place in the final of the 2025 KGL U-17 Inter-Regional Championship after a dramatic 6â5 penalty shootout victory over Greater Accra in Thursday’s semi-final at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence.
The much-anticipated clash lived up to expectations. Greater Accra, unbeaten before the fixture, seized an early advantage when Philip Amponsah struck in the first half and appeared in control until Alidu Issah equalised for Ashanti midway through the second period, forcing a tense 1â1 draw at full time.
In the ensuing shootout, Ashanti kept their composure from the spot, converting the decisive kick to claim a hard-fought win and secure their second final appearance in three years.
The two-time finalists will now meet defending champions Western Region in Saturday’s championship decider at the McDan Teshie Sports Complex, a matchup that promises a thrilling conclusion to Ghana’s premier youth football competition.
Ashanti will aim to capture their second title, having lifted the trophy in 2023 with a memorable victory over Brong Ahafo in Kumasi.
Now celebrating its fifth edition, the KGL U-17 Inter-Regional Championship has become Ghana’s leading platform for identifying and nurturing young football talent.
The 2025 tournament features an expanded 12-team lineup, bringing together all ten Regional Football Associations alongside the two GFA Elite Academies, ensuring competitive depth and nationwide representation.
Supported by a landmark five-year, $1 million sponsorship from the KGL Foundation, the championship remains a cornerstone of the Ghana Football Association’s grassroots development strategy, driving talent discovery, safeguarding player welfare, and inspiring the next generation of Ghanaian football stars.
