Ghana defender Alidu Seidu has opened up on the challenges he faced during his recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury that sidelined him for most of last season.
The Rennes centre-back, who can also play at right-back, admitted it was a mentally taxing process.
“The ACL process is very difficult and it’s all in the head, your mentality, how you cope with the injury,” he told Flashscore in an interview facilitated by Ligue 1.
Seidu credited the support of his teammates for helping him return to fitness after months out following surgery. He missed 24 matches for Rennes and spent 250 days on the sidelines, with his last appearance for the Black Stars coming in November 2024 against Angola in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Cleared to return before the start of the current campaign, Seidu has since made four appearances, three with Rennes’ first team and one with the B team, as the club carefully manages his workload to avoid a relapse.
“With the support of my teammates, the staff, my family and the fans, they gave me the energy to work harder. That made the rehab very smooth,” he said.
Recalling the most difficult part of his recovery, Seidu added, “When you get ACL, you lose everything, your thighs become skinny. The toughest period was the gym and cardio, but I knew this was the process I had to pass through to be back.”
