Black Stars defender Tariq Lamptey has been ruled out of Ghana’s decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers after Fiorentina confirmed he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee and will be sidelined for six months.
The 24-year-old picked up the injury during Fiorentina’s Serie A clash against Como at the Artemio Franchi Stadium on Sunday. Making his first start since joining the Viola in the summer, Lamptey’s night ended in disappointment after just 22 minutes on the pitch.
Medical scans on Monday confirmed the severity of the injury, sidelining the right-back for several months. The setback is a major blow for Ghana coach Otto Addo, with crucial qualifiers against the Central African Republic and Comoros set for October.
Lamptey was part of the squad that secured a vital win over Mali after a shock 1-0 loss to Chad in September. However, he will now miss the Black Stars’ final fixtures in Accra, as they aim to seal qualification for their fifth World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
His absence will force Ghana to look for alternatives in defence at a critical stage of their qualification campaign.
