Black Stars coach Otto Addo has issued a strong defence of Antoine Semenyo, urging critics to understand the fundamental differences between the striker's role at club and international level.
Following Ghana's 1-0 win over Mali, where Semenyo's performance drew some scrutiny, Addo emphasised that the nature of the game in Africa makes direct comparisons with the Premier League unfair.
"He fought until he couldn't run anymore. He was the lone fighter up front," Addo stated, painting a picture of a more isolated, physically demanding role for the Bournemouth forward.
Addo argued that Semenyo's value against Mali wasn't in scoring but in his unselfish work rate, pressing, and channel runs that stretched Mali's defense and created space for others.
This defence highlights the often-unseen tactical work assigned to players in a national team setup compared to their club responsibilities.
Ghana will however shift focus to their last two games against Central African Republic and Comoros as they aim for four points to seal a place for the next World Cup.
