Former USA youth international, Derrick Jones Acheampong, has opened up on his desire to represent Ghana at senior level.
The Columbus Crew midfielder played for the United States at the U20 and U23 levels but has now decided to switch nationality and play for the Black Stars.
Jones, who joined Crew in 2023 and won the Leagues Cup with the Gold and Black, insists he is ready and waiting for the opportunity.
"Yes, I am looking forward to see if I can get the opportunity to represent them and you know it is my mother nation so it's always going to be good to play for them," he told GHANASoccernet in an exclusive interview.
The Black Stars are on the verge of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a good run in the qualifiers. The Group I leaders will secure their place at the tournament with victories in the upcoming games against Chad and Mali.
Having spent most of his career in the United States, Jones believes it will be a dream come true to represent Ghana in front of family and friends in North America.
"Yes, especially it being here. My family is here and it would be very nice to play in front of friends and family. Like I said, I am just waiting for an opportunity to prove myself," he added.
While Jones has struggled for consistent game time this season at Crew, he remains one of the most experienced players in Wilfried Nancy's squad.
