The Ghana Chamber of Mines has called for the establishment of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to mobilize funding for the development of the Western Corridor railway line, describing it as vital infrastructure for the mining industry and the wider economy.
Mr. Ahmed Nantogmah, Chief Operating Officer of the Chamber, made the call when the Parliamentary Select Committee on Lands and Natural Resources paid a courtesy visit to the Ghana Manganese Company.
He stressed the urgent need for dedicated financing to revamp the railway network that serves the western enclave, home to major mineral operations including GMC.
“The development of the Western Corridor railway is not just a mining-sector priority; it is a national economic imperative,” Mr. Nantogmah said.
He explained that a reliable railway system would enhance bulk mineral haulage, reduce pressure on roads, and strengthen Ghana’s competitiveness in the global minerals market.
The Chamber also urged government support for the establishment of a manganese refinery in Ghana, which Mr. Nantogmah said would retain greater value from mineral resources, boost industrialization, and generate skilled jobs.
“A refinery here will transform the manganese value chain. Instead of exporting raw ore, we would produce higher-value products locally, creating more jobs, revenue, and economic resilience,” he said.
Discussions with GMC and the Committee focused on three key priorities: establishing a manganese refinery, developing the Western Corridor railway, and combating illegal mining (galamsey).
Mr. Sanja Nanja, Vice Chairperson of the Committee, commended the Chamber for its proactive engagement and assured that Parliament remained committed to advancing policies that promote sustainable mining and national development.
He said the Committee would work with stakeholders to ensure mining contributed not only to revenue but also to industrialization, job creation, and the fight against illegal mining.
