VfB Stuttgart needed penalties to see off a spirited Eintracht Braunschweig in a thrilling DFB Pokal first-round tie that finished 4-4 after extra time.
The game at the Eintracht-Stadion swung back and forth, with the hosts stunning Stuttgart early through Sven Köhler’s strike. Ermedin DemiroviÄ responded quickly with a header, before adding his second after the break. Fabio Di Michele’s brace and a late own goal from Sanoussy Ba pushed the tie into extra time. Nick Woltemade’s equalizer, set up smartly by German-Ghanaian forward Jamie Leweling, proved crucial as the contest went to penalties.
Leweling, who delighted Stuttgart fans with his lively runs, also held his nerve from the spot. Goalkeeper Alexander Nübel produced key saves, allowing Lorenz Assignon to fire home the decisive kick for an 8-7 win in the shootout.
For Braunschweig, there was heartbreak after fighting toe to toe with Bundesliga opposition. For Stuttgart, relief and pride, especially with Leweling’s fine display, as attention now shifts to their upcoming league test against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
