A high-powered delegation of women executives and innovators within Ghana’s fintech ecosystem, led by technology entrepreneur and digital transformation advisor Ethel Cofie, last Friday, paid a courtesy call on the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Matilda Asante-Asiedu.
The delegation, made up of leading members of the Ghana Fintech and Payments Association (GFPA), visited to advance dialogue on strengthening women’s participation in Ghana’s digital financial sector. Speaking on behalf of the group, Ms. Cofie congratulated the Deputy Governor on her appointment and underscored the urgency of closing structural gaps that limit women’s advancement in fintech.
She outlined proposals around gender-responsive licensing frameworks, structured mentorship programs, and pilot initiatives to digitize women-led micro and small businesses—measures that could accelerate inclusive growth across the industry.
Mrs. Asante-Asiedu, in her response, reaffirmed the Bank of Ghana’s commitment to inclusion and innovation.
She highlighted recent directives requiring financial institutions to design products for women entrepreneurs and report gender-disaggregated data, as well as BoG’s partnership with the African Development Bank’s Affirmative Finance for Women in Africa (AFAWA) initiative to expand women’s access to credit. She also pointed to ongoing rural financial literacy campaigns and innovations such as the offline e-Cedi feature, designed to broaden access to credit and digital payments.
The meeting concluded with agreement on closer collaboration between regulators and industry leaders. Plans for a joint working group and an annual Women’s Financial Inclusion Report signal a forward-looking step toward embedding women as central drivers of Ghana’s digital economy—an agenda Ms. Cofie continues to champion.
“Our goal is to ensure that women are not only included in Ghana’s financial sector but are empowered to lead and innovate within it,” Ms. Cofie said. “When women thrive in fintech, the entire economy benefits.”
