Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo has said current punishments for racism in football do not go far enough, insisting stronger measures such as prison sentences should be considered.
His remarks come after what he described as a “painful” episode of racial abuse during his side’s Premier League opener against Liverpool last weekend.
The Ghana international, who struck twice in Bournemouth’s 4-2 defeat at Anfield, reported the incident directly to referee Anthony Taylor.
Merseyside Police later confirmed the arrest of a 47-year-old man on suspicion of an aggravated public order offence.
The suspect has been released on bail and barred from attending any regulated football match in the UK while investigations continue.
Speaking in his first interview since the incident, Semenyo expressed frustration at the response of both football authorities and the legal system.
“Whatever the Premier League are doing, it’s not enough and there’s more that needs to be done,” he told ITV News.
He stressed the need for tougher deterrents to protect players and eliminate such behaviour from the game.
“It could be jail time, it could be banned from stadiums for a lifetime, it could be anything along the lines of that, but I feel like there has to be something else,” he said.
