Bibiani Gold Stars are on their way to winning the 2025 GHALCA Top 4 tournament after overcoming Hearts of Oak on penalties in their second match.
The Ghana Premier League champions kicked off their campaign at the tournament with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Asante Kotoko on Wednesday.
Today, the team from Bibiani locked horns with Hearts of Oak at the University of Ghana Stadium for their second match at the tournament.
In a game that produced four goals in 90 minutes, Gold Stars struck first in the 20th minute, taking the lead through a penalty kick converted by talisman Samuel Atta Kumi.
Later in the 35th minute, Justice Arthur also found the back of the Hearts of Oak net, slotting in his effort from close range to double the lead for Gold Stars.
Despite what appeared to be a mountain to climb after going two goals down, Hearts of Oak remained calm in their play, putting together some sleek passes and dominated proceedings.
After their patience and impressive build-up, the Phobians pulled one back through youngster George Paaku, giving the team a lifeline before the break.
Three minutes into the second half, Hearts of Oak scored a second courtesy of a strike from Hussein Mohammed to level the score.
Despite a good performance from both teams in the remainder of the second half, neither side could score again as the game ended 2-2 at full time.
Gold Stars subsequently went on to win the game 5-4 on penalties, surviving the night and resilience of Hearts of Oak.
The win means Gold Stars top the tournament’s standings with 6 points and are the favourites to lift the trophy on Sunday,
