English-Ghanaian defender Kelvin Abrefa proved vital for Reading as they earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Bolton Wanderers in League One on Wednesday night.
In front of an excited crowd at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, the game began with Bolton dominating possession but struggling to break Reading down. The first half ended goalless, with the visitors defending resolutely despite being pinned back.
Bolton finally struck in the 52nd minute when Mason Burstow finished off a neat move from Amario Cozier-Duberry’s pass, sending the home fans into celebration. Reading looked in danger of leaving empty-handed until Abrefa stepped up late in the game.
With six minutes left, the 21-year-old fullback surged forward and found Andre Garcia, who calmly slotted the equalizer into the top corner. It was Abrefa’s second assist of the season, showing once again his growing influence in the team.
The draw means Reading extend their unbeaten record against Bolton to six in the last 14 meetings. Abrefa, who played the full 90 minutes, continues to shine early in the campaign.
Next, Reading face Wycombe Wanderers on August 23.
