Ghana Football Association (GFA) General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo, says the decision to extend the tenure of the GFA President from two terms to three will only yield benefits in the long run.
At Congress on August 12, 2025, members approved the amendment despite widespread public criticism.
Out of 123 delegates, 114 voted in favour, with Asante Kotoko abstaining while Hearts of Oak backed the motion.
“It’s only with time that we’ll see the benefits,” Harrison Addo stated on Joy FM.
Asked to explain the rationale, he pointed to consistency with global practice. “The statute says that if you are bringing a proposal, you bring a proposal and an explanation why you want it.
"The explanation given by Yashin when they brought it was the fact that the EXCO is made of 12 members; for 11 members, they have three terms, and the president alone has two terms. The second reason was that FIFA has its EXCO and everyone has three terms. CAF the same, alignment. We need to align.”
The decision has intensified debate locally, with attention now shifting to whether current president Kurt Okraku will seek a third term when his mandate ends in 2027.
