Rot-Weiss Essen have strongly condemned the racist abuse directed at German-Ghanaian midfielder Kelsey Owusu after Monday night’s cup clash with Borussia Dortmund.
The club released a statement describing the incident as “absolutely unacceptable” and vowed to stand by their player.
The game ended in controversy when Owusu went into a stoppage-time challenge with Dortmund’s Yan Couto, catching him heavily on the knee. Couto could not continue and had to be carried off, with referee decisions sparking debate. Former referee Babak Rafati later called the tackle worthy of a red card.
The aftermath quickly spilled onto social media, where frustration from fans crossed into hateful and racist attacks against the 21-year-old. Both coaches condemned the insults immediately after the match, making it clear that criticism of the foul should not turn into personal abuse.
RWE stressed that while Owusu’s challenge was a mistake, no player deserves racist hostility. “Kelsey Owusu is part of our team and our club,” their statement read. “Racism has no place in football or society. Our players will always have our protection.”
