Auxerre’s return to Ligue 1 has been defined by resilience and belief, with Ghana midfielder Elisha Owusu at the heart of their progress.
The 27-year-old has grown into a natural leader, wearing the captain’s armband with authority while insisting that true leadership goes beyond titles.
“For me, really, there is no difference because if you want to bring something to the team, armband or not, you can do it,” Owusu told Flashscore in an exclusive interview.
That attitude has been key in guiding a squad that many doubted could compete at the highest level. Auxerre not only survived but impressed, producing memorable results such as their victory away at Marseille. “When you beat this kind of team in that atmosphere away, I think it shows that we have something special,” he recalled.
Owusu’s leadership also extends to managing the bond with fans. “In France, it’s like this: the fans are very passionate. One day, everyone is good and happy, but when everything starts to go left, you have to go see them and talk.”
Heading into the new season, his message is clear: humility and hunger. “First of all, be humble and not think that now we have arrived. We need to keep the same hunger and willingness to fight.”
For Auxerre, the goal remains survival. For Owusu, the mission is to guide with consistency and prove that last season’s success was no fluke.
