Schalke 04 head coach Miron Muslic has condemned the racist abuse suffered by Ghana winger Christopher Antwi-Adjei during Sunday’s DFB-Pokal tie against Lokomotive Leipzig, describing the incident as “sickening.”
The abuse occurred in the 13th minute when Antwi-Adjei went to the touchline to take a throw-in.
At least one home supporter directed racist insults toward him, forcing the referee to halt the game briefly so the stadium announcer could issue a warning.
Rather than showing solidarity, sections of the Leipzig crowd responded by booing the player every time he touched the ball until the final whistle.
Antwi-Adjei later filed a police complaint, with investigations now underway. Schalke condemned the behaviour as “utterly incomprehensible and disappointing,” stressing its commitment to fighting racism.
Muslic, visibly angered after the game, made clear his stance: “When I hear such things, it makes me sick.
"We cannot just file this away after 120 minutes. This is an issue that must be talked about. Chris told the team he was racially abused, and as players and staff we tried to support him as best as possible.
"We must fight racism clearly and decisively. People like to downplay it, saying it was just one person, but the entire stadium sensed what had happenedâyet they booed him. That is not the act of one individual.”
Schalke reiterated its long-standing policy of promoting tolerance and diversity, reminding supporters that racism has no place in football or society.
