WAFCON 2024: Black Queens reach quarter-final after thumping Tanzania
Ghana's Black Queens are through to the quarter-finals of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations after beating Tanzania in the final group game on Monday evening.Princella Adubea gave Ghana an early lead after a quick start by the West Africans but the Taifa Stars levelled through Stumai Abdallah. Alice Kusi converted from the spot before Evelyn Badu and Chantelle Hlorkah sealed the win late in the game.The Black Queens headed into the game knowing only a win will keep them in the competition, and wasted no time in establishing their intentions with an early pressure on their opponents.The early push paid off after the Tanzania goalkeeper's strike met Adubea as Ghana broke the deadlock in the 12 minute.However, the Black Queens stuttered late in the first half after a freekick from Tanzania was poorly cleared, leading to Abdallah firing home for the leveller.After the break, the Black Queen regained control of the match with Princess Marfo causing troubles for the Tanzanian defence. The Bay FC forward was fouled in the box halfway into the second half, with Kusi netting from the spot.Second half substitute Evelyn Badu extended Ghana's advantage after a Stella Nyamekye freekick fell to the ex-Hasaacas Ladies star.Things went from good to better for the Black Queens with Chantelle Boye Hlorkah curling home in the final minute.The Black Queens will face Algeria in the quarter-final of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations next.
