Kumasi, April 05, GNA - The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Sanitation Brigade, has in the last six months arrested and arraigned more than 30 people for various insanitary offences.
Mr Osei Assibey-Antwi, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), said all the culprits had since been punished by the court, as they were slapped with a minimum of one month imprisonment each in hard labour, after pleading guilty.
Their offences ranged from open defecation, dumping of refuse at unapproved areas, to water pollution.
In addition, the court ordered the accused persons to evacuate garbage at some selected vicinities in the metropolis until they had finished with their sentences.
Mr Assibey-Antwi, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA)in Kumasi, after the Assembly in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) had desilted choked drains, cautioned the people to be law-abiding.
The exercise was carried out in TUC, Danyame and South Suntreso, while there are also plans to undertake similar exercises at Santasi-Anyinam, Abrepo, Anloga Junction and Atafoa.
It is part of efforts by the assembly to ensure the free-flow of water in the drains, and thereby, stem the recurrent flooding of those areas during downpour.
The MCE, as part of the programme, also inspected the Kwadaso, Danyame and Suntreso streams, whose courses had been disrupted due to encroachment and other illegal activities.
Mr. Assibey-Antwi disclosed that the assembly was working around the clock to demolish all structures sited on waterways to prevent the areas from flooding, which had been an annual affair, especially during the rainy seasons.
