Zabzugu (NR), April, 4, GNA - The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Zabzugu District of the Northern Region has embarked on its second phase of outreach campaign to engage the public on tax compliance.
The campaign which formed part of the second phase of the nationwide sensitisation exercise is aimed at creating public awareness on the responsiveness to honouring their tax payment for national development.
The theme of the campaign “Our Taxes- Our Future” covered Artisan groups, Transport operators; Faith based groups, Traditional authorities, Women groups, Economic groups, Taxable persons and Entities.
As part of the second phase of the exercise, staff of NCCE in collaboration with Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in the Zabzugu district visited 16 communities and undertook 45 engagements with the public.
The public were educated on the various types of taxes and the mode of payment to encourage public responsiveness to their tax compliance.
Mr Tahiru Imoro, Zabzugu District Director of NCCE, indicated that, payment of tax was a civic duty, required under the law within the provision of the 1992 constitution of Ghana under article 41(j).
“Refusal to pay taxes is against the laws of Ghana and anyone who fails to pay taxes is violating the laws of Ghana and this attracts penalties such as fines or going to jail”, he indicated.
Mr Imoro said honouring tax obligations helped government to undertake development projects such as the provision of roads, hospitals, schools, potable drinking water, electricity and payment of salaries of government workers.
He advised new business entities and individuals to register their business with GRA, pay their taxes on time, keep and maintain records of businesses to ensure compliance with tax laws as well as easy identification of their operations.
