Naa Chirr wants chiefs to change with the times
Wa, Nov. 7, GNA – Naa Puore Puobe Chiir, president of the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs, has reminded traditional rulers on the need to change with the times because like monarchs elsewhere, they were no longer ruling but rather reigning.
He said chiefs should be ready to change certain outmoded customs of theirs, be like “judges on the bench” in the exercise of their judicial functions and maintain their dignity by being kind, understanding, patient and honourable.
Naa Chirr, who is the Paramount Chief of the Nandom, made these remarks after he was elected unopposed and sworn in as the new President of the Upper West Regional House of chiefs at a brief ceremony in Wa on Wednesday.
He took over from Naa Sohimwininye Danaa Gore, Paramount of Dorimon in the Wa West District, whose tenure has expired.
Kuoro Richard Babini Kanton, Paramount Chief of Tumu in the Sissala East District was also elected unopposed as the Vice-President of the House.
Naa Danaa Gore, Naa Ansoleh Gana, Paramount Chief of Jirapa, and Kuoro Kuri Buktie Liman, Paramount chief of Gwollu, were elected to join the President of the House and his Vice as the region’s representatives at the National House of Chiefs.
Naa Chiir promised to work closely with the Regional Coordinating Council and the various Municipal and District Assemblies to promote the socio economic development of the region.
He noted that the efficient progress of local government depended on the full cooperation of traditional authorities and chiefs should therefore they should be kept informed of the activities of local authorities.
“Local Government can only function effectively where the Chiefs lend it their support, where this support is lacking, the local authorities find it difficult to operate and to remain solvent”, he stated.
He appealed to all residents of the region to maintain the peace during and after the December polls as peace was a pre-requisite for development.
Naa Gore, the out-going President of the House, thanked the chiefs for their support and cooperation during his tenure and urged them to stand by the new President.
