The University for Development Studies (UDS) has conferred an honorary doctorate degree on the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, in recognition of his outstanding commitment to promoting education, peace, and social transformation within the Dagbon Kingdom and beyond.
The honour, bestowed at a ceremony in Tamale, acknowledged the Ya-Na’s continuous efforts to advance sustainable development, foster unity, and support educational growth in the Northern Region.
The ceremony was attended by Paramount Chiefs in Dagbon, government officials, Members of Parliament, traditional and religious authorities, students and other representatives of government agencies and civil society organizations.
Professor Seidu Alhassan, Vice-Chancellor of UDS, speaking during the ceremony in Tamale on Saturday, said the Ya-Na’s leadership had been instrumental in transforming Dagbon from a conflict-prone area into a beacon of cohesion and progress.
He said, “The Overlord has been admired by all because he has succeeded in turning conflict into cohesion, unity, and development. Through his efforts, Dagbon has risen again, more united, stable, and forward-looking.”
Prof Alhassan said the Ya-Na’s promotion of reconciliation, forgiveness and dialogue had strengthened peace in the area, adding that his commitment to youth empowerment and collaboration with development partners remained commendable.
He said, “As part of his support to education, the Ya-Na has allocated 500 acres of land for the establishment of a UDS campus at Yendi and has also handed over a facility to enable the university to start running academic programmes.”
In his response, Ya-Na Abukari II, who spoke through Dr Jacob Mahama, Chief of Zangbalun, expressed appreciation to UDS for the honour, describing it as both a recognition and a challenge to further contribute to the development of the Northern Region.
He said, “This honour from UDS is not mine alone but belongs to everyone in the Dagbon Kingdom and all those, who continue to support with their resources and kindness.”
He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the university’s growth and promoting education as a key driver of development.
Mr Ali Adolf John, Northern Regional Minister, commended UDS for acknowledging the Ya-Na’s contributions, describing the award as a testament to his visionary leadership and dedication to progress society.
