Some football fans within the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region have expressed frustration over the performance of the national Black Stars team, in their 2026 World Cup qualifier match against Chad, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The senior male national team, scored first through Jordan Ayew, assisted by Mohammed Kudus in the seventh minute of the first half, but the goal was equalised by Chad in the dying minutes of the game leaving fans disappointed.
Mr Richmond Masevivi, a sports journalist told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) sports that the 1-1 draw, had sparked criticism of Coach Otto Addo’s player selections and tactics.
“I really agree with the calls for Coach Otto Addo to be sacked, the team’s inconsistent performance and failure to capitalise on scoring opportunities, and his decision to leave out experienced players like Thomas Partey on the bench baffles me,” he said.
He said Ghana should have capitalised on the goal scored earlier and pressed harder for another and blamed the coach for his selection and game plan, citing it to be the major contributory factor to the team’s set back in the game.
Mr Masevivi express frustration and disappointment with the team’s performance and charged Coach Addo to either tender in his resignation or face sack by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as a matter of urgency to safeguard the chances of qualification for the team.
“The 1-1 draw against Chad has raised questions about the team’s strategy and player selection. Coach Addo’s tactics have been criticised, and fans are eagerly awaiting the team’s next move to see if they can regroup and secure a win,” he said
Meanwhile, other fans still believed that the Black Stars would win the remaining matches and qualify to be among the 48 countries that would play in the 2026 FIFA world cup which would be co-hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico.
Others say it would be an embarrassing moment for the Black Stars in the World Cup if the team continued to exhibit such a poor performance, with the same style characterised with no enthusiasm and hope.
However, the Black Stars after 7th day of the match, topped Group I with 16 points, followed by Madagascar 13 points, Mali and Comoros with 12 point each while Central African Republic and Chad have 5 and 1 points respectively.
The Black Stars would regroup and play a host to Mali on the 8th day of the match of the ongoing World Cup Qualifiers on Monday, September 8, 2025, at the Accra sports stadium at 1900 hours.
The upcoming match was deemed crucial in determining if the team would have any chance of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup and the team was expected to restrategise to secure wins in their remaining three matches, to make a strong case for qualification.
Despite the criticism, the Black Stars Coach Addo expressed disappointment at the underperformance of the team but hoped that they would win the rest of the subsequent matches to qualify for the next world cup tournament.
He said, “we have to think about Mali, we have to forget about this game and l am happy, very sure other countries that come here will also have difficulties.”
The Coach had earlier also expressed worry about the nature of the Chadian pitch describing it as “hard as concrete,” which many said could have contributed to the team’s poor performance.
