John Abdulai Jinapor in a meeting with stakeholders
The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has intervened to resolve the ongoing dispute between the youth of Tamale and staff of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) in the region.
Parts of Tamale have been without power for days, with some residents accusing VRA/NEDCo of intentionally cutting off their electricity due to the dispute.
Recently, VRA/NEDCo staff withdrew all services in the Tamale Metropolis and surrounding areas following an attack on some staff on July 30, 2025.
Some staff members driving official VRA/NEDCo vehicles were stopped, forcibly removed from their cars, and allegedly assaulted by a group of youths.
Chairman of the Senior Staff Association at NEDCo, Mr. William Asare, stated that the lives of VRA/NEDCo staff and the company’s property have become targets for the youth, who committed the violent act.
He indicated that the innocent staff were beaten with sticks while the vehicles were seized and taken to the Gukpena Palace.
According to Mr. Asare, VRA/NEDCo staff in Tamale and its surroundings are traumatised by the ongoing attacks and now live in fear for their safety.
The Minister of Energy and Green Transition visited Tamale to meet with stakeholders, chiefs, and VRA/NEDCo staff, to seek lasting solutions to the dispute.
“As Minister, my vision is to restore normalcy, bring peace, and ensure that all affected areas are reconnected to the national grid,” he stated.
He urged the youth of Tamale to exercise restraint in the matter and not take the law into their own hands.
“My appeal to the youth is to exercise maximum restraint. I am a son of the land, and there is no way I would do anything that will affect my brothers and sisters in Tamale. Whatever the problem is, let’s work together to find a lasting solution,” he said.
