Miss Malaika Ghana 2023 and the National HIV Youth Ambassador, Lady Nana Yaa Nsarko, has urged the youth to join the fight against HIV, emphasising the devastating impact on young lives and communities.
During an interaction with over 800 students of Wesley Grammar School on July 31, 2024, as part of her “Live On Campaign” Project which forms part of the ART@20 celebrations sponsored by UNFPA and ABBOTT, she stressed the need for collective action to combat HIV’s spread, particularly among the youth.
“HIV is still prevalent and wrecking lives. It attacks the immune system and breaks a person down,” Lady Nana Yaa Nsarko emphasised.
“To salvage your future, join the fight against its spread. We must work together to prevent new infections and support those living with the virus. Abstaining from sex and prevention are key.”
The Campaign aims to mentor and empower young people to prevent the spread of HIV, reduce stigma and make informed choices as they take control of their health. Lady Nana Yaa shared personal stories, highlighting the importance of abstinence, prevention, and support. “HIV is no discriminator; it affects anyone, regardless of your age or career. If you don’t follow a healthy life, you’re at risk.”
She added, “If you want to be on bigger platforms like me, please abstain from sex. But if you’ve decided not to abstain, please don’t condemn yourself rather, protect yourself.”
The students engaged actively, sharing their knowledge and asking questions. According to the National AIDS/ STI Control Programme (NACP), the 2023 national adult HIV prevalence is 1.5%, translating to approximately 334,095 people living with HIV in Ghana.
Dr. Stephen Ayisi Addo, Programme Manager for the National AIDS/STI Control Programme, urged students to acquire knowledge, stay healthy, and keep faith.
Rev. Aku of PAYDP, who represented the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) encouraged students to seek information on their sexuality and empower themselves through education.
The school enacted a drama to showcase their understanding of the topic and share some of their experiences.
The Headmistress of the school was full of praise for the entire team for visiting their school.
