Residents and the Assembly Member for Krobo Odumase in the Kumasi Metropolis want a two-year-old police station constructed to be made operationalized following an upsurge of crime rate in the area.
According to the Assembly Member, Alexander Kessie, the project constructed by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has not been in use because a road linking the station to the other routes has not been fixed.
He is calling on the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to put measures in place to fix the road in order for the police station to be ready for use.
“The project is fully completed. All the things that the police will need are inside but the police station is still sitting idle. It is yet to be commissioned, all because of a few meters of road construction that needs to be done. The police will have nowhere to use their vehicle if the road is not fixed. On this note, I am urging the KMA Chief Executive to help fix that road,” Kessie said.
The residents in an interview with Citi News asked authorities to make the facility operational for their benefit.
According to them, there has been an increase in crime rate in the area in recent times.
Some narrated how at times all their belongings are stolen from their homes, while others are attacked and stabbed to death.
The police station, as observed by Citi News, appears to be decent and resourced enough to serve its purpose.
But there were cobwebs inside the building. It has also gathered dust since because it is not in use.
The front part of the building has been taken over by traders.
Residents and other people who have been robbed before recounted their experiences to Citi News.
They believe crime will reduce if the police station is operationalised.
“We are appealing to the government to help make this police station operational because the crime rate here is very high. They can at times enter your room to steal all your belongings. In some instances, they stab and kill people in the process. They commit a lot of crimes in this community. I became a victim some time ago when all my belongings were taken away after I woke up from my sleep,” a resident stated.
“Since they are done with the police station, measures should be put in place to make it ready for use because this place is unsafe. There is a high crime rate here. The road leading to this police station should be fixed to aid the work of the police when it is made operational,” another resident appealed.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly said the station has not been operational because the road leading to the police station has not been constructed.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Assembly, Godwin Okuma-Nyame, the Regional Minister is collaborating with the KMA Chief Executive to fix the road.
“Recently, the Regional Minister and the KMA Chief Executive including some security personnel visited the place to work together to find how best the road can be fixed so that we can actually open up the police station.”
