The Research Staff Association (RSA) National Executives of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) have donated essential items to Tamale Children’s Home and Nyankpala Health Centre to mark the climax of their 36th annual general meeting (AGM) held at CSIR-SARI, Nyankpala, in the Tolon district of Northern Region.

The AGM, held under the theme ‘Accelerating resilience for food and nutrition security in Ghana: the role of transformative research, development and partnership’, highlighted the Association’s commitment to linking research excellence with community development and social responsibility.
Led by RSA president, Dr Shadrack Kwadwo Amponsah, the executives on behalf of CSIR members and staff presented a range of supplies including toiletries, bags of second-hand and new clothing, crates of eggs, packs of tissues, boxes of tomato paste, bar and liquid soaps, bags of rice and an undisclosed amount of money to Tamale Children’s Home.
Nyankpala Health Centre received items worth GH¢40,000 – including packs of liquid soap, electric bulbs, rechargeable lamps, a refrigerator, medical drugs, surgical masks, gloves, bedspreads, dustbins, detergents, toiletries, bottled water and electrical sockets, among others.

The donations, supported by Ernest Chemists and DrugNet Pharmaceutical Company, were aimed at improving the welfare of children and enhancing quality healthcare delivery at the health centre.

According to Dr. Amponsah, the gesture was informed by community needs identified during the AGM. “As part of our new slogan, RSA – Research for Impact, we decided to support the host community. With help from the Local Organising Committee, we identified Nyohini Children’s Home and Nyankpala Health Centre as beneficiaries,” he explained.
He expressed hope that the donations will assist caregivers in their work and improve healthcare delivery at the centre to help reduce mortality rates. He added that RSA plans to collaborate with members to support more impactful initiatives and is currently seeking support to establish a solar-powered backup system for the health facility.
The Paramount Chief of Nyankpala Traditional Area, Naa Mohammed Ibrahim, expressed gratitude to RSA executives, noting that the donation will motivate health workers to deliver better services.
Acting Supervisor-Tamale Children’s Home, Madam Saratu Suleimana, also thanked RSA for remembering the children – noting that the donation came at a crucial time as the facility was running short of basic supplies. She appealed for other corporate bodies and philanthropists to extend similar support to the home.

District Health Director-Ghana Health Service, Mr. Samuel Prah, commended RSA for the timely intervention, particularly provision of a refrigerator and other medical items to address stockouts caused by supply chain disruptions.
Health Facility Officer-Nyankpala Health Centre, Bartholomew Amaale, noted that the rechargeable lamps will enable staff to provide services during power outages, adding that the facility serves more than 5,000 residents.

“These resources will enable us to handle at least 200 more outpatient cases monthly, particularly for maternal and child health,” Mr. Amaale said.
