The Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Dr. Shafic Suleman, has paid a working visit to the Bono Regional office of the commission as part of a nationwide tour to familiarise himself with the operations of regulated utilities.
The visit, which took place on Tuesday, 19 August 2025, included a stop at a pro-poor water project site at Kato in the Berekum East District to assess the state of the facility and its impact on the community.
During the tour, Dr. Suleman held meetings with officials of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo). Both utilities made presentations on their operations in the region, highlighting achievements as well as key challenges.
On behalf of the Regional Chief Manager, Theophillous Tawiah Collins, the Regional Quality Assurance Manager, Madam Janet Atebiya, outlined successes such as the introduction of paperless bill delivery and updates on the Wenchi Water Project. She, however, cited the urgent need for a water expansion project in the Sunyani Municipality to meet growing demand, as well as concerns over private borehole operators encroaching on GWL’s operations.
Representing the Area Manager, Ing. Eugene Addo, NEDCo’s HR Manager Mr. Peter Ayamga detailed customer-focused initiatives, including the revamping of the Sunyani Customer Care Centre, extended operational hours from 6am to 10pm, the establishment of new zonal offices in Chiraa, Nsoatre and Berekum, and upgrades to electricity feeders in Sunyani and Mim.
He also pointed to challenges facing NEDCo in the region, such as over 51 percent of customers being under the lifeline bracket, infiltration of illegal metres and the use of substandard materials in SHEP projects, which undermine revenue mobilisation and result in financial losses.
In response, Dr. Suleman assured GWL of the commission’s support for the Sunyani Water Project, currently at 10 percent completion, and pledged to work with NEDCo to address the issue of illegal metres and related operational setbacks.
