The Managing Director (MD) of State Housing Company Limited (SHC), John S. Bawah, has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to completing abandoned housing projects across the country, in line with the President’s vision to ensure value for taxpayers’ money.
Speaking at the inauguration of a recently completed nine-unit housing development at Adenta in Accra, the MD noted that public funds must deliver value; and as such, incomplete projects represent locked capital with no benefit to the public.
“In line with the President’s directive, we are prioritising the completion of projects that have been abandoned over the years. It’s important that taxpayers see value in the investments made,” the MD said.
He disclosed that discussions are far advanced to revive the long-abandoned Pokwase Housing Project. “We expect to deliver between 1,600 and 3,200 housing units under this project over the next three years, with private sector partners supporting the financing,” he added.
The estimated cost of the newly commissioned nine-unit project stands at GH¢8–9million, though the project, initiated over a decade ago, has undergone several changes in contractors, affecting original cost estimates.
The MD further stated that SHC is leveraging its strong brand equity to attract private sector collaboration. “Our buildings sell out quickly. For example, today’s commissioned units are already sold, which gives contractors the confidence to pre-finance construction.”
On infrastructure, SHC is working closely with local assemblies to improve road access to housing developments. “It is a collaborative effort. While we handle the buildings, we rely on local authorities to ensure road networks are improved,” he noted.
Regarding land acquisition, the Mr. Bawah assured the public that SHC conducts thorough due diligence through its estate management department, ensuring litigation-free lands. “Our lands are either government-acquired or purchased through well-verified agreements, giving home-buyers peace of mind.”
SHC continues to play a vital role in addressing Ghana’s housing deficit, which currently stands at about 1.8 million units.
