The Ghana Insurers Association (GIA) has launched the 2025 edition of its annual Insurance Awareness Month. The event was launched last week at the GIA’s new head office edifice, aptly called Insurance House in Kanda, a suburb of Accra, and will last till August 1.
This year’s edition is being celebrated under the theme: Inclusivity & Accessibility – purpose beyond profit. The launch was attended by CEOs in corporate Ghana, insurance industry chieftains, wider stakeholders and partners of the industry.
Welcoming guests to the event, Nashiru Iddrisu, the 1st Vice President of the GIA explained that “This year’s theme is not just a slogan – it is a call to action. It challenges us to look beyond the balance sheets and profit margins, and to focus on the real impact of insurance on the lives of Ghanaians. It reminds us that insurance is not a privilege for the few, but a right for all” adding that “it is a tool for empowerment, resilience and shared prosperity.”
He pointed out that the message #Charge Right or Phase Out# is not merely a campaign statement, but is rather a principle. “It speaks to the need for fairness, transparency and value in our pricing models” he asserted. “It is a reminder that our long-term sustainability depends on our ability to serve with integrity and to price with purpose.”
Yvonne Osei Addo, Vice President of the Chartered Insurers Institute Ghana, delivered a solidarity message from the CIIG. She called for recognition that insurance is for everyone, regardless of background, income or circumstance. “It is about protecting our communities, our families and our futures” she said. “Inclusivity means everyone deserves access to insurance. Accessibility ensures that protection is within reach. By making insurance more accessible and inclusive, we can empower more Ghanaians to make informed decisions about their financial security.”
The CEO of the GIA, Dr Kingsley Kwesi Kwabahson presented the activities scheduled for this year’s Insurance Awareness Month.
One is the GIA Industry Games which will bring the various insurance companies together to compete with each other in various sporting disciplines at the University of Ghana, Legon. There will be other entertaining programmes taking place alongside as well as aerobics.
Another event will be a GIA Street Insurance Programme which will be done to celebrate World Insurance Day by promoting insurance on the streets or traffic zone areas to motorists, pedestrians and the general public. This will give insurance companies the opportunity to share their corporate and product and services literature, in Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi and Cape Coast.
An Insurance Solutions Forum has also been scheduled which will enable the GIA to receive proposals from companies who desire to offer innovative products or services that can foster improvements in the operations of the insurance companies. The GIA seeks to use this to create a platform for these parties to present their services for consideration by the insurance companies, thereby driving industry innovation.
The GIA also will carry out corporate social responsibility activities, in the form of donations and distribution of souvenirs, to the Nima Kanda community which has hosted it for the past 30 years.
Yet another programme planned during the Insurance Awareness Month is the holding of Insurance Clinics in collaboration with Graphic newspapers, in order to educate the public on insurance issues.
A thanksgiving service and musical concert will also be held to give thanks to God for allowing the insurance industry to thrive in spite of the numerous challenges it has faced.
The other progamme planned for the month is known as “Drive Time with Insurers” which will seek to give more education to the public, as representatives of the industry will be selected by their respective companies to address selected specific topics on insurance to the general public.
Ghana’s insurance industry customarily embraces activities conducted each year during its awareness month and companies and practitioners alike are enthusiastic that this year’s edition will be the biggest and most impactful yet.
