
The Ghana Statistical Association (GSA) last week paid a courtesy call on the Government Statistician, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu at his office in Accra.
The meeting was to among other things, congratulate the new Government Statistician on his appointment and strengthen the existing ties between the association and the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).
The Association (GSA) was led by its President, Prof. Saeed Bashiru and Vice President for the Southern Sector Rev. Prof. Francis Ayiah-Mensah. Other members of the team were Dr. Carine Malor, General Secretary; Francis Yaw Daah, Deputy General Secretary; and Dr. Richard Berimah Twum an Elected Executive Member.
Prof Bashiru congratulated Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu on his new role as the Government Statistician and pledged the association’s support to ensure that he succeeds. Prof Bashiru indicated that the association has confident in the abilities of Dr. Iddrisu to deliver on the GSS’ legal mandate.
The General Secretary, Dr. Carine Malor underscored the need to deepen the relationship between the association and GSS. She emphasized the association’s readiness to collaborate and support GSS initiatives, particularly in areas of research, surveys, census, capacity building, professional services and the promotion of statistical literacy among the general public.
She announced that the 2025 Annual Statistics Conference would be held in Koforidua from October 29 to November 1, 2025.
Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu welcomed the Association’s commitment and highlighted the importance of a united statistical community in achieving national development and reset agenda. He also shared updates on key initiatives such as re-branding of the service, timely and accurate delivery of data, building the capacity of staff for instance in AI, Big Data and Data Analytics.
He also emphasized the need to partner with key stakeholders and uphold global ethical standards. Dr. Alhassan however, expressed concern about funding challenges and hoped that this would change with time.
Both parties expressed optimism about the future of statistics in Ghana and pledged to work closely to ensure that high-quality, reliable data continues to inform decision-making at all levels.
It was agreed for the establishment of a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to guide future collaborations. The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to fostering a strong and vibrant statistical ecosystem that will be beneficial to all stakeholders.
