For the first time this season, Accra Hearts of Oak produced a sensational attacking display to beat Medeama SC 0-2 at the Tarkwa TNA Stadium in an electrifying match.
The Phobians scored twice from counter-attacks to record the comfortable win and consigned the Mauve and Yellow to their first defeat at home this season.
Kwabena Boateng capitalised on a defensive howler from Nurudeen Abdulai to put the visitors in front, beating goalkeeper Appiah Kubi with a deft touch in the 63rd minute. Substitute Mawuli Wayo put the icing on the cake with a thumping header in the 88th minute, outsmarting Nurudeen Abdulai and Kamaradini Mamudu to beat Appiah Kubi for the second time on the night in Tarkwa.
Hearts have jumped to 7th in the table with 12 points while Medeama remain in third place with 15 points from 9 matches.
In Friday’s other game held at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra, FC Samartex 1996 delivered a last gasp equaliser to draw 1-1 against Accra Lions FC in a highly entertaining Premier League match.
Just before the end of the first half, Abdul Shakun-Abubakar put Lions in front in the 43rd minute and appeared to be cruising to victory until Benedict Afful pulled parity with the equaliser in added time to share the spoils at the UG Stadium.
The defending champions are now fourth in the table with 14 points while Lions remain a point above the drop zone.
Asante Kotoko SC suffered their first defeat at home in the Premier League after losing 1-0 against Heart of Lions on Sunday night.
Kwadwo Obeng Junior’s strike in the 28th minute separated the two teams at the Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi. Kotoko had the lion’s share of the possession but it mattered little when the final whistle blew.
The Porcupine Warriors have slipped to third in the table after being overtaken in second position by Nations FC.
Elsewhere, Bibiani Gold Stars FC dropped points at home after drawing 0-0 against Dreams FC at the Duns Park in Bibiani.
The two teams failed to score as they shared the spoils in an entertaining draw. Gold Stars have opened a three-point lead with 19 points while Dreams remain in the bottom three.
Newcomers Basake Holy Stars recorded an impressive 2-2 draw at Berekum Chelsea on Sunday. The Premier League new boys managed to pick a point on the road against a formidable Chelsea side at the Golden City Park.
Emmanuel Sarpong put the hosts in the lead in the 45th minute before Stephen Awuah Baffour pulled parity for the visitors. Daouda Ben Sedibe made it 2-1 for Holy Stars before Stephen Amankona grabbed the equaliser on the stroke of full time.
Nsoatreman FC had to dig deep to draw 2-2 against Bechem United at home on Sunday. Mohammed Abdul Rahman put the hosts in front with a superb finish as early as the 9th minute before Emmanuel Abban got the equaliser in the 51st minute. Emmanuel Ankrah scored an own goal to give United the lead before Collins Kofi Kudjoe put Nsoatreman back in the 78th minute.
Vision FC dropped points at home again after drawing 0-0 against Aduana FC. The two teams settled for a point each after the pulsating draw at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex.
Nations FC continued their fine form with a vital 1-0 win at Karela United FC to go second in the Premier League table. Red-hot Faisal Charwetey’s 75th minute strike separated the two teams at the Tamale Sports Stadium. Nations have jumped to second in the table with 16 points, three behind leaders Gold Stars FC.
