The monitoring visit by the Road and Transportation Committee has revealed significant advancements in several major road projects across the Greater Accra region, aimed at improving transportation and easing congestion.
While progress is evident, challenges related to utility relocation, compensation, and financial arrangements persist.
This was made known when the Members of the Committee led by the Chairman Hon. Isaac Mensah Adjei visited major roads in the Greater Accra Region which are undergoing rehabilitation.
One notable project is the Flowerpot Interchange, substantially completed in March 2024 by the Department of Urban Roads after a prolonged construction period that began in March 2017.
The Accra-Tema Motorway Expansion project, awarded on March 21, 2024, is currently 20% complete and scheduled for completion by August 2, 2027. This project includes a 10-lane interchange, 10 footbridges, and 26 culverts. However, the project has seen some challenges related to the relocation of ECG poles, ongoing compensation payouts, and potential impacts on water pipes.
The last two projects site visited by the Committee were the Tema Motorway-Dawhenya Road project and the Ashaiman-Afienya Road project. These projects are both underway. The Ashaiman-Afienya Road project, which commenced in May 2022 and is expected to be completed by December 2024, is currently 51% complete. However, progress has been slowed due to resettlement issues, financial arrangement availability, utility relocation, and ongoing compensation processes. The project includes the construction of 11 pedestrian footbridges.
Authorities are actively working to address these challenges to ensure the timely and successful completion of these critical projects.
