Asante Kotoko’s prolific striker Kwame Opoku scored the decisive goal at the Baba Yara Stadium, securing a hard-fought victory for the Porcupine Warriors over Aduana FC in their inaugural match under interim coach Abdul-Karim Zito, who replaced Prosper Ogum.
With immense pressure on the newly appointed Technical Director Karim Zito to deliver the double, Kotoko dominated the game from the onset, seeking an early goal to establish their authority.
Despite Aduana’s resolute defense, Kotoko’s persistence paid off in the 25th minute when winter signing Kwame Opoku broke the deadlock with a goal that proved to be the match-winner.
The strike was Opuku’s seventh of the season, leaving him just four goals shy of the top scorer’s chart.
Although Aduana responded strongly, including being awarded a penalty in the first half, they failed to capitalize and departed empty-handed.
This win marked Kotoko’s first win in five attempts (two losses and two draws in their last four league games), boosting their points tally to 50 and narrowing the gap to six points behind leaders Gold Stars SC, with a game in hand.
Kotoko’s impressive display also featured their first clean sheet in five games and their first goal in three matches.
Following this promising start to the post-Ogum era, Karim Zito and his team will aim to build on this momentum in their pursuit of the domestic double.
Their next challenge is a high-stakes encounter against arch-rivals Hearts of Oak in the Super Clash at the Accra Sports Stadium.
