The Minister of Roads and Highways Kwame Agbodza has directed Maripoma to return to the site and complete Ofankor Nsawam highway project.
This follows fruitful discussions over the weekend.
The contractor had abandoned the site following a $45 million debt owed to him. The construction works remained at various stages of completion, with the majority of the roads in a bad state.
This left commuters enduring congested roads and choking dust despite widespread complaints about the road’s appalling condition.
Mr Abogdza told jounalsist on Monday April 2 while on inspection tour touityr of the project that “The Ofankor-Nsawam road had been abandoned for some time but we have been having discussions with the contractor and we came to the conclusion that, effective immediately, he should go back to the site while we conclude on modalities to pay them.
“They have agreed, so those who are frustrated, the government is aware and feels the pain of residents and commuters, help is on its way.
“I expect Maripoma to immediately restart remobilising to the site. Within three days, we should see actions on that project.”
The $346.47 million project started on July 20, 2022, and was scheduled to be completed on July, 20, 2024.
In another development, the Minister has ordered two local contractors, First Sky and Ozwald Investments Limited, to immediately mobilise to the site to begin road construction works on the Ashaiman-Afienya stretch and the Tema Motorway to Dawhyena stretch. The move is expected to bring significant relief to road users in those areas who have to endure hours in traffic commuting to and from that stretch.
Speaking to journalists after an emergency visit to the areas, Kwame Governs Agbodza said the government is highly concerned about the human security nature of the road.
He noted that the two contractors, Ozwald Investments Limited and First Sky have showed dedication to work despite the challenges facing the road sector.
