
Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, has assured artisanal fishermen that they will be exempt from the annual close fishing season under the John Mahama administration.
However, this exemption comes with conditions. Fishermen must adhere to best fishing practices, including observing traditional non-fishing days and avoiding harmful fishing methods.
During her visit to the Nygeresia fishing beach, Emelia Arthur emphasized the importance of responsible fishing practices to ensure the sustainability of Ghana’s fisheries resources.
As the member of Parliament for Shama Constituency, she understands the significance of balancing the needs of fishermen with the need to protect the environment.
Emelia Arthur’s commitment to sustainable fishing practices is part of her broader vision for the fisheries sector. She has pledged to address concerns over illegal fishing practices, which have led to Ghana being issued a “Yellow Card” by the European resources.
By promoting responsible fishing practices and addressing these concerns, Emelia Arthur aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s fisheries resources.
She urged the fishermen to cooperate with the Fisheries Commission’s taskforce, which is made up of personnel from the Ghana Navy and the Marine Police Section of the Ghana Police Service which will begin patrolling the seas to enforce compliance with fishing regulations.
Emelia Arthur also addressed concerns about premix fuel supply, stating that it is an essential component of fishing and will be regularly supplied once the landing beach committee has been formed.
The committee’s membership will include representatives from various stakeholders, including fishermen, canoe owners, and the fisheries ministry.
She also announced the abolition of the Regional, District and zonal premix coordinators.
Furthermore, Emelia Arthur announced plans to provide high-quality fishing gears to artisanal fishermen once the economy has stabilized to be paid on hire-purchase basis.
This move by the Mahama-led government aims to support the livelihoods of small-scale fishermen and promote sustainable fishing practices.
The exemption of artisanal fishermen from the close fishing season is a significant policy decision, according to Emelia Arthur.
