Former Mion MP, Mohammed Aziz has said government is acting in its best interest by terminating last-minute appointments and recruitments by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration.
The former MP who contested under the ticket of the NDC explained that huge debts have been inherited by the NDC government, hence prudent expenditure is key for government to offset the debt by the erstwhile NPP administration.
Speaking in an interview on TV3’s New Day, February 26, 2025, Mohammed Aziz noted that government’s finance is not in a good shape for more employment.
“We are dealing with debt of about GHC130million, we are dealing with debt from the Ghana Institutional Suppliers, we are dealing with debt from GETFund close to GHC1billion, school feeding and Independent Power Producers, this is the debt that has been left behind for President Mahama and the NDC to deal with.
“This is at a time the international market has been locked for Ghana. We cannot go out to borrow from the international market like they did. So, we must appreciate this within the context of our national economy,” he stated.
However, Mohammed Aziz emphasised that government will open recruitment window for the affected persons once there’s financial muscle to employ more people.
“Anytime that our finances improve as a government we will open another avenue for these young people to apply and if they so qualify, they will be employed,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to end the on-going terminations of appointments in the Public Service.
TUC says the mass termination of employment of teachers, nurses and others, who have been educated at great cost to their families and the nation and who may have stayed at home for years struggling to obtain employment can be devastating for these young men and women.
