We’ll consider private partnership to build more prisons – Deputy Interior Minister-designate

Deputy Interior Minister-designate, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi has said the Ministry will engage private partners to deal with the congestion in the various prisons across the country.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee on Monday, February 24, the Deputy Minister-designate reiterated the earlier suggestion of his yet-to-be boss, the Interior Minister during his vetting who said government will consider an agreement with private sectors to build more prisons for the decongestion in the various prisons.

“There’s this idea of partnering with private sector to build prisons so that we can rent like it’s happening in the US and other places. We have to look at that,” he stated.

Okletey Terlabi also suggested that government will consider engaging the private sector to build more bigger prisons for a relocation to prisons which will freely accommodate prison inmates.

The Deputy Minister-designate noted that the cost-benefit analysis will be anlaysed before any agreement.

“The other thing is that some of the prisons in would be describes as prime areas now can be relocated to get the private sector in exchange for better, bigger places outside where we can get cheaper land because I don’t think that at all cost the prisons must be where they are now, no, they can be relocated,” he said.

“But I think that one too will also require serious discussions and we’ll look at the cost-benefit before we go into it,” he remarked.
